Luce is the icon wine of the Estate, which represents the harmonious balance between the elegant structure of Sangiovese and the fullness of Merlot, between the tradition of Montalcino and the personal interpretation we have given to this land. To celebrate the twenty-fifth vintage, we’ve designed a special bottle that shows, in the shape of a calligraphic phrase, a quote of Vittorio Frescobaldi that evokes the values on which Luce is based: “Here’s the memory of the vineyard and of the work, of the earth, and of the sun, of listening to time and to the song of seasons.”

Luce was the first wine from Montalcino made by blending Sangiovese and Merlot grapes.

It was thanks to the collaboration of the Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi and Robert Mondavi Families that came the idea of matching the roundness and softness of Merlot, whose vineyards were planted in these plots since the 1970s, with the elegance and structure of Sangiovese.

Since 2005, Lamberto Frescobaldi is completely responsible for this project. He continues to write the history of Luce, a Super Tuscan wine appreciated all around the world, directing the production with great passion, from the vineyard to the making of each year’s blends.

Vintage 2017: In 2017, a crisp spring was followed by a warm, sunny and dry summer with bright cloudless skies. The clayey soils of the Merlot vineyards provided the plants with adequate water reserves, which helped reduce any heat-related stresses. Rain showers in mid-September supported a perfect ripening of the grapes.

The wine displays an intense, almost impenetrable, ruby red color. On the nose, the wine introduces itself with intense red fruits and subtle hints of incense and spicy notes that bequeath extraordinary complexity. In the mouth, the bouquet’s complexity comes alive through elegant tannins that gift the wine with unique balance and structure.
